Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary port configurations available on the Cisco IE-5000-16S12P switch? +
This ruggedized industrial switch offers high-density connectivity, featuring 16 SFP ports for fiber-optic uplinks or long-distance data transmission and 12 copper 10/100/1000 Mbps ports. This hybrid configuration provides the flexibility needed to integrate legacy equipment with modern high-speed backbone infrastructure in challenging industrial environments.
Is the Cisco IE-5000-16S12P suitable for Layer 3 routing applications? +
Yes, this model supports advanced Layer 3 switching capabilities. While it ships with the LAN Base feature set, it is engineered to handle complex routing tasks, enabling efficient inter-VLAN communication and improved traffic segmentation within industrial networks that require reliable, deterministic performance at the edge or distribution layers.
How does the IE-5000-16S12P handle PoE requirements for industrial devices? +
The switch is equipped to deliver Power over Ethernet across its 10/100/1000 copper ports. By integrating PoE directly into the switch architecture, you can efficiently power connected endpoints like IP cameras, sensors, and wireless access points without needing separate power injectors, thereby reducing clutter and simplifying cable management in constrained industrial cabinets.
Can the Cisco IE-5000-16S12P be deployed in harsh outdoor or factory environments? +
Designed specifically for the Industrial Ethernet market, this switch is built to withstand extreme temperatures, high vibrations, and significant electromagnetic interference. Its robust hardware construction ensures reliable operation in demanding conditions where standard commercial-grade switches would typically fail, making it a staple for manufacturing floors and utility substations.
What management features does the Cisco IE-5000 series offer for network monitoring? +
The switch supports comprehensive management through industry-standard protocols, including SNMP, RMON, and Cisco’s dedicated network management software. Administrators can monitor traffic patterns, configure security policies, and manage VLANs effectively, ensuring high uptime and visibility across the industrial network infrastructure through either the Command Line Interface or user-friendly web-based tools.
Does the Cisco IE-5000-16S12P support redundancy protocols to prevent downtime? +
Reliability is a core feature of the IE-5000 series. It supports various redundancy protocols, including Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Resilient Ethernet Protocol (REP), and other high-availability mechanisms. These features allow the switch to rapidly recover from link failures, ensuring continuous connectivity for critical industrial automation applications and preventing costly operational interruptions.
How do the SFP ports enhance the performance of the IE-5000 switch? +
The 16 SFP ports provide essential flexibility for network design, allowing you to use specific fiber modules tailored to your distance and bandwidth requirements. Utilizing fiber-optic connections is particularly beneficial in industrial settings to eliminate noise interference and provide the high-speed backhaul necessary for data-intensive applications like real-time video surveillance and large-scale sensor arrays.
Is the LAN Base image included with the IE-5000-16S12P, or does it require separate licensing? +
The IE-5000-16S12P typically comes pre-configured with the LAN Base feature set, providing a robust foundation for standard switching, basic routing, and enhanced security. This base license is included to ensure that your industrial network is operational out-of-the-box, supporting essential Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions required for most automated network deployments.
