GLC-SX-MMD Overview
Cisco GLC-SX-MMD 1000BASE-SX SFP transceiver module, MMF, 850nm, DOM GLC-SX-MMD
GLC-SX-MMD is an SFP networking equipment used to connect your switches and router to the network through a fiber optic cable. Basically, it is designed to work with a fiber optic cable known as Multimode, which is used to transfer data over narrow distances.
Specifically, it is manufactured to use with multimode fiber, a type of cable used in local networks.
Commonly, it functions at the IEEE 802.3z 100BASE-SX standard, which is considered a common standard for networking for gigabit network connections.
It works with 50 µm multimode fiber up to 550 meters. For older 62.5 µm fiber (like FDDI-grade), it works at a distance of up to 220 meters. With special, laser-optimized 50 µm fiber, it can reach up to 1 kilometer.
Uses an 850-nanometer wavelength, suitable for short-range communication. It has a flexible operating temperature range, which means it can work in different environmental conditions. Supports DOM (Digital Optical Monitoring) for a seamless tracking of the system’s activity.
It uses a dual LC/PC connector, a common type of connector for fiber optic cables.

*A mode-conditioning patch cord, as specified by the IEEE standard, is required regardless of the span length. Note how the mode conditioning patch cord for 62.5-μm fibers has a different specification from the mode-conditioning patch cord for 50-μm fibers.
**ITU-T G.652 SMF as specified by the IEEE 802.3z standard.
***Specified at transmission wavelength.
