Core and Distribution Switches

Often referred to as the data switch, a core switch is located at the physical core of a network, and hence, it has to be a high-capacity switch. In sum, core switches provide the ultimate aggregation point for the network and enable various aggregation modules to work alongside one another.

Whereas, a distribution switch is positioned in distribution layer and it links upwards to layer core switch and downwards to the access switch. A distribution switch serves as a bridge between a core layer switch and an access layer switch and is often referred to as an aggregation switch.
