Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of the Nortel Business Ethernet Switch 120-24T PWR in a corporate network? +
The Nortel 120-24T PWR is a managed Layer 2 switch designed to provide reliable connectivity for small to medium-sized business environments. It supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) on its ports, allowing you to power devices like IP phones, wireless access points, and security cameras directly through the Ethernet cabling, which simplifies infrastructure deployment and cable management.
Does the 120-24T PWR model support full Power over Ethernet across all 24 ports? +
This switch features 24 ports capable of delivering PoE, but the total power budget is shared across the unit. You should calculate the total wattage requirements of your connected devices, such as VoIP phones or APs, against the switch's power supply capacity to ensure stable operation. It is ideal for standard office deployments where mixed device power consumption is common.
What management features are available for the Nortel 120-24T PWR? +
As a managed switch, this unit provides administrators with granular control over network traffic, security, and performance. You can utilize VLAN tagging to segment traffic, configure port-based security for access control, and leverage SNMP for remote monitoring. These features allow IT teams to effectively manage network stability and optimize data throughput for mission-critical business applications.
Is the Nortel 120-24T PWR compatible with standard 10/100 Ethernet devices? +
Yes, this switch is fully backward compatible with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet standards. It functions as a flexible solution for environments that require a mix of legacy and modern network devices. It automatically detects the speed of connected hardware, ensuring reliable auto-negotiation and seamless integration into existing network topologies without requiring additional configuration.
How does this managed switch handle network traffic prioritization? +
The switch supports Quality of Service (QoS) features, which allow you to prioritize time-sensitive traffic like voice and video data over standard web traffic. By configuring traffic queues, you ensure that high-priority packets are processed first, minimizing latency and jitter. This is essential for maintaining clear call quality for internal VoIP systems in a busy office environment.
Can I stack the Nortel 120-24T PWR with other switches in my network rack? +
While this unit is designed for standard 19-inch rack mounting, it operates as an individual managed entity. To scale your network, you can connect this switch to your core distribution layer via high-speed uplink ports. This architecture allows you to expand port density efficiently while maintaining centralized control over your localized branch or department switching fabric.
What are the common deployment scenarios for the Nortel 120-24T PWR? +
This model is most effectively deployed in edge-layer roles, such as connecting desktop workstations, IP surveillance systems, or conference room hardware. Its PoE capability makes it a top choice for offices transitioning to unified communications where powering endpoint devices at the desk level is necessary. It provides a robust, manageable foundation for stable local area network connectivity.
Why is this switch listed as 'no cord' in the product specifications? +
The 'no cord' designation indicates that the unit is sold as the chassis hardware only. This is a standard practice for enterprise networking equipment, allowing you to source regional-specific power cables or utilize existing power distribution units (PDUs) in your server rack. Always ensure you provide a compatible power source that meets the unit's specific voltage requirements for safe operation.
