JC101A#ABB Overview

HP 5800 series switches offer an unmatched combination of Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet port density, high-availability architecture, and full Layer 2 and Layer 3 dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6 capabilities. In addition to wire-speed line-rate performance on all ports, the switches include patented Intelligent Resilient Framework (IRF) technology and Rapid Ring Protection Protocol (RRPP), which allow local or geographically distributed HP 5800 switches to be interconnected for higher resiliency and performance. Available in PoE and non-PoE models as well as 1 RU and 2 RU form factor configurations, HP 5800 switches are built on open standards and include an open application architecture (OAA) module slot that enables flexible deployment options for new services. These versatile switches are ideal for use in the network core of buildings or departments, or as high-performance switches in the convergence layer or network edge of enterprise campus networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary expansion capabilities of the HPE 5800-48G switch? +
The HPE 5800-48G features two dedicated expansion slots, providing significant deployment flexibility. These slots allow for the addition of various interface modules, enabling you to tailor your network connectivity—such as adding high-speed uplinks or extra stacking modules—to meet specific data center or campus core requirements without needing to replace the entire chassis.
Does the HPE 5800-48G support Layer 3 routing protocols for enterprise networks? +
Yes, this is a fully managed Layer 3 switch. It is designed to handle advanced routing tasks, supporting protocols such as static routing, RIP, OSPF, and BGP. This makes it an excellent choice for enterprise environments that require robust inter-VLAN routing, traffic segmentation, and sophisticated network control at the access or distribution layer.
Is the HPE 5800-48G suitable for high-density 1GbE access deployments? +
Absolutely. With 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, this switch is purpose-built for high-density environments. Its non-blocking architecture ensures that traffic flows efficiently across all ports, making it ideal for connecting workstations, IP phones, wireless access points, and other edge devices that demand consistent, reliable Gigabit performance in a managed enterprise network setting.
What management options are available for the HPE 5800-48G? +
This switch offers comprehensive management capabilities, including a standard Command Line Interface (CLI) via console port, SNMP for network monitoring, and a web-based GUI. These tools allow network administrators to perform granular configuration, monitor traffic statistics, and maintain security policies, ensuring seamless integration into existing HPE networking management ecosystems.
Can the HPE 5800-48G be deployed in a stacked configuration? +
The 5800 series is engineered to support resilient stacking configurations. By utilizing the expansion slots for stacking modules, administrators can manage multiple switches as a single logical entity. This simplifies administrative overhead, enhances bandwidth capacity, and increases overall network availability through redundant paths and synchronized failover capabilities.
How does the HPE 5800-48G handle traffic prioritization for voice and video? +
The switch utilizes advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features, including traffic classification and prioritization based on Layer 2 (802.1p) or Layer 3 (DSCP) headers. By implementing these policies, you can ensure that latency-sensitive applications like VoIP and video conferencing receive dedicated bandwidth and minimized jitter, maintaining a high standard of service quality across your internal infrastructure.
Are the power supplies on the HPE 5800-48G modular or fixed? +
The HPE 5800-48G is designed with modular power supply slots. This design choice is critical for enterprise reliability, as it allows for redundant power configurations. By installing dual power supplies, the switch remains operational during a power source failure, ensuring critical uptime for your core network services and minimizing the risk of unplanned outages.
What is the recommended mounting environment for this switch? +
This unit is designed as a rackmount switch, fitting into a standard 19-inch enterprise server rack. It consumes a single rack unit (1U) of space, making it efficient for high-density data center or IDF closets. When deploying, ensure adequate airflow at the intake and exhaust vents to maintain optimal operating temperatures and performance longevity.
