DGS-1008D/A Overview

This desktop switch offers an inexpensive alternative to fibre optics for the SOHO and small and medium business (SMB). Increasing network loads can be handled with the increased bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet.

Gigabit connectivity without fibre
The switch provides 8 Gigabit ports in the familiar Ethernet format, so it works seamlessly with existing network cables (Cat5 or higher). Up to 2000 Mbps can be achieved in full-duplex mode, giving workstations bottleneck-free access to server data.

Plug-and-Play installation
All there is to do is plug the cables into the switch. All ports support both straight-through and crossover cable types, eliminating the need for an uplink port. And with 10/100/1000 Mbps auto-sensing, no configuration is required.

Think Green
By sensing whether attached devices are ON or OFF and estimating the cable length, the switch is able to adjust its power consumption, for a total saving of up to 40%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary performance advantages of the D-Link DGS-1008D/A 8-port Gigabit switch? +
This switch offers high-speed Gigabit connectivity, allowing for rapid data transfers across your local network. By providing 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds on all ports, it eliminates bottlenecks, making it an ideal solution for bandwidth-intensive tasks such as large file transfers, media streaming, and seamless online gaming in home or small office environments.
Does the DGS-1008D/A require manual configuration for optimal operation? +
No, this is a true plug-and-play device. As an unmanaged switch, it is designed for effortless deployment. Once you connect your Ethernet cables and power, the device automatically negotiates link speeds and duplex modes for each connected device, requiring zero software installation or administrative oversight to function effectively.
How does the D-Link DGS-1008D/A handle power efficiency during operation? +
This model incorporates advanced Green Ethernet technology. It automatically detects the status of connected ports and cable lengths to adjust power consumption accordingly. By putting inactive ports into a sleep mode or reducing power for shorter cable runs, it effectively lowers operational costs and heat generation without compromising network throughput.
Is the DGS-1008D/A compatible with older 10/100 Mbps network devices? +
Absolutely. The ports on this switch are auto-negotiating and backward compatible. You can freely mix older Fast Ethernet devices with newer Gigabit-enabled hardware. The switch intelligently senses the speed capabilities of each connected device and adjusts the link speed automatically to ensure stable, reliable communication across your entire infrastructure.
Can the D-Link DGS-1008D/A be mounted in a server rack? +
This unit is designed specifically as a desktop switch. Its compact, sleek white form factor is intended to sit neatly on a desk, shelf, or flat surface. While it does not include rack-mount hardware for standard 19-inch server cabinets, its small footprint makes it perfect for discreet placement in home offices or small wiring closets.
What type of environment is best suited for this 8-port unmanaged switch? +
The DGS-1008D/A is perfectly suited for SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) deployments. It provides a simple, reliable way to expand your network capacity for desktops, printers, VoIP phones, or network-attached storage. Its fanless design ensures silent operation, making it an excellent choice for quiet work areas where noise levels must remain low.
How does the flow control feature improve network stability? +
The switch supports IEEE 802.3x flow control, which manages data traffic between connected devices to prevent buffer overflows. If a receiving device becomes overwhelmed by incoming traffic, the switch sends a signal to pause transmission briefly. This prevents dropped packets, ensuring reliable data delivery even during periods of heavy network utilization.
Are there specific cabling requirements for the D-Link DGS-1008D/A? +
To achieve full Gigabit performance, we recommend using Category 5e (Cat5e) or higher rated Ethernet cables. The ports feature Auto MDI/MDIX crossover detection, which eliminates the need for specific crossover cables. Regardless of whether you use straight-through or crossover cables, the switch will automatically configure the connection to facilitate proper data transmission.
