B3G124-24 Overview

Why buy a regular switch when you can buy an Enterasys SecureStack for less? The SecureStack™ B-series stackable switch family delivers cost-effective Layer 2 switching with embedded security support for 802.1x, Web and MAC authentication, RFC 3580 VLAN quarantine, and support for Secure Networks policy through an optionally purchased upgrade license. Advanced QoS capabilities deliver L2/L3/L4 classification, bandwidth flow control and traffic prioritization to support IP telephony (VoIP) and IP Multicast (IPMC) voice/video/data convergence applications. High-availability features include support for closed-loop stacking, redundant power, power over Ethernet (PoE), fault-tolerant management, rapid re-convergence (802.1w RSTP), and link-aggregation (802.3ad). Closed-loop stacking assures that a single switch or cable connection failure in the stack will not impact the overall stack operation.
Up to eight (8) SecureStack B-Series switches can be supported in a single stack with one IP address for complete stack management. A single stack supports up to 384 10/100/1000Mbps ports with 32 gigabit uplinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Enterasys Securestack B3 B3G124-24 function in a high-density L2 environment? +
The B3G124-24 is engineered for robust Layer 2 connectivity, providing reliable 24-port switching performance in edge deployments. Its architecture is optimized for environments requiring consistent, stable throughput for standard data traffic. By handling switching operations at the hardware level without the complexity of managed overhead, it ensures efficient packet delivery across all connected devices in your local network infrastructure.
Is the Enterasys Securestack B3G124-24 suitable for physical stacking in a closet? +
Yes, the Securestack B3 series is specifically designed for stackable configurations, allowing you to increase port density by grouping multiple units together. This modular approach enables scalable network expansion while maintaining a centralized management footprint within your server rack. It is an ideal choice for growing enterprises that need to add capacity incrementally without overhauling existing rack infrastructure.
Does the B3G124-24 support advanced security protocols for enterprise traffic? +
While the B3G124-24 is categorized as an unmanaged Layer 2 switch, it maintains the 'Securestack' heritage by providing foundational hardware-based reliability. It is best suited for network segments where traffic isolation is managed via upstream devices or VLANs. This switch acts as a secure, high-performance physical gateway for endpoints, ensuring consistent connectivity without the vulnerabilities often associated with complex, misconfigured managed switch software.
What is the primary benefit of deploying an unmanaged B3 series switch? +
The primary advantage is simplified 'plug-and-play' deployment, which drastically reduces the time required to bring new network segments online. By eliminating the need for extensive CLI configuration or firmware tuning, the B3G124-24 allows technicians to quickly expand connectivity. It offers a straightforward, low-maintenance solution for branch offices or localized workgroups that prioritize uptime and simplicity over granular traffic shaping.
Can the B3G124-24 be integrated into existing Enterasys infrastructure? +
The B3G124-24 is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing Enterasys or Extreme Networks environments. Its hardware architecture follows legacy compatibility standards, making it an excellent drop-in replacement for aging hardware or a cost-effective expansion unit for existing Securestack arrays. Its physical form factor ensures it occupies minimal space while maintaining consistency with the established physical cabling standards of your current network setup.
What type of power and environmental requirements does the B3G124-24 need? +
This unit is designed to operate within standard enterprise rack environments, utilizing internal power supplies that support typical data center voltages. For optimal performance and longevity, the switch should be installed in a climate-controlled area with adequate airflow. Adhering to these standard environmental guidelines ensures the internal switching fabric remains cool and maintains its rated performance levels under sustained high-volume traffic conditions.
Does this model support auto-negotiation for connected devices? +
The B3G124-24 features intelligent auto-negotiation, allowing the switch to automatically detect the speed and duplex settings of any device connected to its ports. This functionality ensures that legacy hardware and modern workstations can coexist on the same segment without requiring manual intervention. By automatically optimizing link settings, the switch ensures maximum efficiency and minimizes packet collisions across all 24 ports.
How does the B3G124-24 handle cabling and port density in a rack? +
With 24 ports in a standard fixed-form factor, the B3G124-24 maximizes rack space efficiency. The port layout is designed to facilitate clean cable management, reducing clutter in the wiring closet. This density is ideal for small to medium-sized deployments where every rack unit counts, providing a compact yet powerful solution for connecting a high number of endpoints to your core network infrastructure.
