AM871B#ABB Overview

HP 8/80 SAN Switch is ideal for medium-to-large-sized organizations that need a scalable and high-availability solution to meet rapidly evolving storage requirements. When deployed as a core SAN fabric switch, the fully enabled 80 port SAN Switch provides a single-switch core footprint that is ideal for SAN fan-out using lower-density B-series switches.

The 8/80 SAN Switch features a non-blocking architecture with as many as 80 ports concurrently active at 8 Gb/s full duplex providing an aggregate bandwidth of 1280 Gb/s.

Optional Integrated Routing provides selective device sharing while maintaining remote fabric isolation for higher levels of scalability and fault isolation.

The Power Pack+ software provides the SAN administrator with the necessary tools to monitor the health and performance of the network through a single pane of glass. Enhanced capabilities ensures ample bandwidth for mission-critical applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the primary function of the HPE 8/80 Base SAN Switch in a data center? +
The HPE 8/80 Base SAN Switch is a high-performance Fibre Channel switch designed to support large-scale storage area networks. With 48 enabled full-fabric ports, it facilitates high-speed, reliable data transport between servers and storage arrays. It is engineered to handle demanding enterprise workloads, providing the scalability needed for growing virtualized environments while ensuring low latency and high throughput for mission-critical applications.
Can I expand the port count on the HPE 8/80 Base (48) switch later? +
Yes, this switch is designed with scalability in mind. The 8/80 base model comes with 48 ports active, but it supports further expansion through additional port activation licenses. This modularity allows your infrastructure to grow alongside your business demands without requiring an immediate forklift upgrade, helping you manage capital expenditure while maintaining consistent performance across your fibre channel fabric.
What kind of performance speeds does the HPE 8/80 SAN Switch support? +
This switch supports 8 Gbps Fibre Channel technology, offering substantial bandwidth for high-performance storage environments. It is designed to deliver non-blocking performance across all enabled ports, ensuring that your data transfers remain fast and efficient. By utilizing this switch, organizations can effectively reduce bottlenecks in their storage networking, enabling faster backup windows and improved application response times across the entire fabric.
Is the HPE 8/80 Base SAN Switch compatible with existing legacy SAN infrastructure? +
The HPE 8/80 maintains strong backward compatibility with older 2 Gbps and 4 Gbps Fibre Channel devices. This makes it an ideal candidate for upgrading aging infrastructure without needing to replace every HBA or storage port in your network. It facilitates a seamless transition to modern 8 Gbps speeds, protecting your previous hardware investments while providing a clear path to high-speed storage networking.
How is the HPE 8/80 SAN Switch typically managed in an enterprise environment? +
Management is handled through industry-standard tools, including HPE's management software, which provides a comprehensive view of the SAN fabric. Administrators can perform centralized monitoring, configuration, and diagnostics through a GUI or CLI. These tools simplify complex fabric tasks, allowing for efficient management of zoning, port performance tracking, and health monitoring, which is essential for maintaining high availability in professional storage networks.
What are the common deployment scenarios for the HPE 8/80 SAN switch? +
This switch is frequently deployed in large enterprise data centers serving as the core fabric switch or as a high-density edge switch. It is particularly well-suited for environments running heavy virtualization, large-scale database clusters, and consolidated storage deployments. Its ability to provide consistent 8 Gbps throughput across 48 ports makes it a robust choice for mission-critical setups where uptime and throughput are absolute requirements.
What is the physical rack form factor for the HPE 8/80 Base SAN switch? +
The HPE 8/80 SAN Switch is designed to fit standard 19-inch rack enclosures. Given its 48-port density and high-performance capabilities, it is built to occupy minimal rack space while providing massive throughput. Proper rack mounting is essential for ensuring efficient airflow and thermal management, which helps maintain the long-term operational reliability of the internal components under sustained high-load conditions.
Does this switch support advanced features like fabric trunking or virtual fabrics? +
Yes, the HPE 8/80 SAN Switch supports advanced fabric services, including fabric trunking and virtual fabrics. These features are critical for enterprise environments that require logical separation of traffic and optimized path utilization. By leveraging these capabilities, network administrators can ensure maximum fabric efficiency and improved security, allowing for better segregation of workloads within the same physical hardware switch.
