AM869A#ABB Overview

HP 8/40 SAN Switch is ideal for organizations requiring a flexible solution that's forward and backward compatible, either as a small “building-block” switch for a departmental fabric or as a high-performance edge switch in larger core-to-edge SAN configurations.

The 8/40 SAN Switch enables 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gb FC technology in configurations of 24, 32, or 40 ports. A fully populated SAN switch with 40 ports provides an aggregate bandwidth of 680 Gb/sec. The 8/40 SAN Switch also allows organizations to use 4 Gbit/sec SFPs today and upgrade to 8 Gb/sec SFPs when required.

The optional Integrated Routing provides selective device sharing while maintaining remote fabric isolation for higher levels of scalability and fault isolation.

The Power Pack+ software provides the SAN administrator with the necessary tools to monitor the health and performance of the network through a single pane of glass. Enhanced capabilities ensures ample bandwidth for mission-critical applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the primary function of the HPE 8/40 Base (24) Fibre Channel switch? +
The HPE 8/40 Base SAN switch is designed to provide high-performance Fibre Channel connectivity for enterprise storage area networks. It features 24 active ports out of the box, allowing for scalable, low-latency data transmission between servers and storage arrays. This switch is ideal for organizations requiring a robust, reliable foundation for their SAN infrastructure while maintaining the flexibility to upgrade port density as network demands grow.
Can I expand the port count on the HPE 8/40 Base SAN switch after initial deployment? +
Yes, this model is built with scalability in mind. While it ships with 24 full-fabric ports enabled, the switch architecture supports port activation upgrades. This allows your team to increase your port count to the full 40-port capacity as your storage network expands, providing a cost-effective path to growth without needing to replace existing hardware or disrupt your current fabric configuration.
What performance speeds does the HPE 8/40 Base SAN switch support? +
The HPE 8/40 Base switch supports high-speed 8Gb/s Fibre Channel connectivity, ensuring rapid data movement for demanding virtualization and database environments. It is also designed to be backward compatible with 4Gb/s and 2Gb/s technologies, providing the versatility needed to support mixed-speed environments during technology transitions or when integrating legacy storage hardware into a modernized SAN fabric.
How do I manage the HPE 8/40 Base switch in a data center environment? +
Management is typically handled through standard HPE SAN management software, which provides a comprehensive interface for fabric monitoring, zoning, and provisioning. The switch supports industry-standard CLI and web-based management tools, allowing administrators to perform real-time diagnostics, configure port settings, and maintain optimal fabric health efficiently from a centralized location within your administrative workstation.
What deployment scenarios are best suited for the HPE 8/40 Base SAN switch? +
This switch is perfectly suited for mid-to-large enterprise data centers that require a reliable, high-performance edge switch. It excels in environments where fabric stability is paramount, such as hosting virtual machines, large-scale tape backup operations, or mission-critical database applications. Its compact rackmount design makes it an excellent choice for optimizing rack space while delivering enterprise-class Fibre Channel performance to host and storage connections.
Is the HPE 8/40 Base switch compatible with non-HPE server environments? +
The HPE 8/40 Base switch utilizes industry-standard Fibre Channel protocols, making it highly interoperable with a wide array of servers and storage arrays from other major vendors. Whether you are running a heterogeneous data center or a standardized HPE environment, this switch ensures seamless integration and reliable data fabric connectivity across your existing server platforms.
What level of reliability can be expected from this SAN switch? +
Engineered for 24/7 mission-critical operations, the HPE 8/40 Base switch features high-availability design elements including redundant power and cooling options. It provides the consistent uptime and low packet-loss rates required for enterprise storage fabrics. Its architectural design prioritizes data integrity and path redundancy, ensuring your storage network remains operational even under heavy, unpredictable workloads common in high-density virtualized environments.
How does this switch handle zoning and security within the fabric? +
The HPE 8/40 Base switch supports robust hardware-enforced zoning, which is essential for segmenting your storage fabric and ensuring secure communication between specific servers and storage targets. By implementing fabric-wide zoning, you can effectively isolate traffic, prevent unauthorized access to sensitive LUNs, and improve overall SAN performance by reducing unnecessary broadcast traffic across your high-speed network infrastructure.
