AM866B#ABA Overview

HPE 8/8 SAN Switch is targeted for SMB enterprises and is ideal for entry-level SANs, and as an edge switch for core-to-edge SAN environments. The 8/8 SAN Switch provides SAN connectivity that improves system performance, maximizes the value of virtual server deployments, and reduces overall storage costs. The 8/8 Base SAN Switch provides an affordable single-switch solution for a new, small SAN installation and connects to storage and servers only. An optional Full Fabric SAN scaling license provides connectivity to other switches. This comes with a Full Fabric license and may be connected to multiple switches. Both 8 port switches provide growth options to non-disruptively scale to a max of 24 enabled ports. The 8/8 SAN Switch provides auto-sensing 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gb full duplex performance to enable up to 128 Gb of throughput. For investment protection, the 8/8 SAN Switch may be populated with 4 Gb B-Series SFPs today and upgraded to 8 Gb B-Series SFPS when necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of the HPE 8/8 Base SAN switch in a storage area network? +
The HPE 8/8 Base (0) e-port SAN switch is designed to provide scalable, high-performance Fibre Channel connectivity for small to mid-sized storage area networks. It functions as a foundational fabric switch that allows for flexible expansion, enabling administrators to easily connect servers to storage arrays while maintaining high data throughput and low latency for critical business applications.
How many ports are initially available on the AM866B#ABA model and can it be upgraded? +
This model ships as a base unit with zero active ports, providing you the flexibility to license only what you currently require. It supports up to 8 ports, allowing you to scale your environment as your storage demands grow. You can add port licenses to activate additional connectivity without needing to replace the existing hardware infrastructure.
Does the HPE 8/8 Base switch support integration into existing SAN fabrics? +
Yes, this switch is designed for seamless interoperability within existing Fibre Channel fabrics. It supports standard-based E-port connectivity, making it an ideal choice for expanding your current SAN environment or bridging isolated islands of storage. Its robust management software ensures it integrates smoothly with other HPE and third-party SAN hardware components currently active in your data center.
What are the physical deployment requirements for the HPE 8/8 SAN switch? +
The HPE 8/8 Base SAN switch features a compact 1U form factor, making it highly efficient for space-constrained rack environments. It is designed for standard 19-inch rack mounting, allowing you to maximize your cabinet density. Ensure your rack setup provides adequate airflow and power management consistent with standard enterprise-grade server and networking equipment requirements.
How do I manage and monitor the performance of the HPE 8/8 Base switch? +
Management is handled through the robust HPE management tools, which offer a centralized interface for fabric configuration, performance monitoring, and diagnostics. These tools provide real-time visibility into port utilization and fabric health, allowing IT teams to proactively address potential bottlenecks or connectivity issues before they impact your storage availability.
What level of reliability can be expected from this managed Fibre Channel switch? +
This switch is engineered for high-availability enterprise environments. By utilizing proven Fibre Channel technology, it delivers the consistent performance and data integrity required for mission-critical storage traffic. Its managed architecture allows for redundant paths and fabric-wide fault detection, significantly reducing the risk of downtime and ensuring your storage infrastructure remains resilient under heavy workloads.
Can the AM866B#ABA handle high-speed data transfers in a virtualized server environment? +
Absolutely. The switch is built to handle the intense, bursty traffic patterns typical of virtualized server environments. By providing dedicated, low-latency Fibre Channel pipes, it ensures that your hypervisors and storage arrays can communicate efficiently, which is essential for maintaining the performance of virtual machines and complex database applications during peak operational hours.
What is the benefit of the 'Base (0) e-port' configuration for my business? +
The Base (0) configuration is a cost-effective strategy for businesses that want to control initial capital expenditure. By starting with zero activated ports, you avoid over-provisioning your infrastructure. You only invest in the specific port licenses you need today, and as your data requirements evolve, you can activate further ports, ensuring your hardware investment scales linearly with your actual operational growth.
