AK859B Overview

HP simplifies SANs by combining 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel performance with a complete SAN management system. Your future is protected today with an infrastructure capable of supporting emerging technologies at today's 4 Gb/s prices.

The HP 8Gb SAN Connection software makes installing your first SAN (or your hundredth) easy. An entire SAN may now be deployed in minutes. SAN novices and seasoned experts will appreciate the simplicity and power of the included SAN Connection Manager (SCM) software. SCM works seamlessly with both HP P6000/EVA and HP P2000/MSA to quickly handle common cross-platform management and maintenance tasks as well as create LUNs.

The 8Gb Simple SAN Connection Kit consists of the 8/20q 8 Gbps switch, four 81Q HBAs, and SCM – along with all the cables, 8 Gbps SFPs and documentation you need.

The 8/20q switch and Connection Kit offer enterprise-class functionality and value.

Today's Performance at Yesterday's Prices

• The future is within your reach today with state-of-the-art 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel technology offering the bandwidth today that you will need for support of emerging technologies. 8 Gb/s speed extends the useful life of your purchase. Migrate at your own pace.

Simplicity at its Finest

• Setting up your first SAN is now fast, easy and fool-proof. Eliminate the risk of expensive configuration errors with point-and-click wizards. Ensure full optimization and “best practices” with minimal training and expertise.

Built with the Future in Mind

• Start with an 8-port switch and as your needs change; simply expand via four-port license keys up to 20 ports per chassis. Then link additional switches to create a larger high-performance enterprise SAN of any topology.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of the HP AK859B 32-port 8Gb Fibre Channel blade? +
The HP AK859B is a high-density Fibre Channel blade designed for SAN Director switches. It provides 32 ports of 8Gb connectivity, allowing organizations to scale their storage area network infrastructure. It is engineered to deliver high-performance data transfer rates required for mission-critical storage environments and complex enterprise-level virtualization setups.
Is the HP AK859B compatible with existing legacy SAN environments? +
This blade supports auto-sensing speeds, ensuring compatibility with 2Gb, 4Gb, and 8Gb Fibre Channel infrastructure. By maintaining backward compatibility, it allows administrators to integrate new high-speed hardware into existing SAN architectures without requiring a complete overhaul of current storage arrays or legacy switches.
How does the 8Gb speed of the AK859B impact network throughput? +
The 8Gb Fibre Channel throughput effectively doubles the bandwidth compared to 4Gb variants. This increased capacity significantly reduces latency and congestion during peak data transfer periods, making it an ideal choice for high-transaction databases, heavy backup operations, and demanding data center applications that require consistent, high-speed storage access.
Can I use the AK859B blade for high-availability SAN configurations? +
Yes, this blade is designed for integration into modular Director-class chassis, which are built for high availability. When deployed in a dual-switch configuration, the AK859B enables redundant data paths. This setup prevents single points of failure, ensuring that your storage connectivity remains active even if a specific blade or director module encounters a fault.
What is the standard deployment scenario for the HP AK859B switch blade? +
The AK859B is typically deployed in core enterprise data centers that require massive port density and robust storage connectivity. It is most effective in environments utilizing HP StorageWorks SAN Directors, where space is a premium and the need for scalable, high-performance Fibre Channel connectivity is necessary to support growing virtual machine clusters.
Does the AK859B require specific software or firmware updates? +
To ensure optimal performance and feature set utilization, it is recommended to verify that your current SAN Director firmware is compatible with the 8Gb generation of blades. Before installation, check your switch's release notes to confirm that the specific microcode level supports the AK859B hardware, ensuring seamless integration into your existing management fabric.
What type of optics are compatible with the ports on the AK859B? +
The ports on this blade are designed to support standard Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP+) transceivers compatible with 8Gb Fibre Channel speeds. Using high-quality, certified SFP+ modules ensures that the physical layer link remains stable and provides the necessary error-free transmission rates required for high-speed SAN operations across your fiber cabling infrastructure.
How does the AK859B contribute to overall SAN management efficiency? +
By consolidating 32 high-speed ports onto a single blade, the AK859B simplifies cabling and management within the chassis. This high-density approach reduces the total number of physical modules required, which in turn streamlines port mapping and logical unit number (LUN) masking processes across your fabric, making it easier for administrators to manage large-scale storage environments.
How can I obtain a competitive bulk quote for multiple AK859B units? +
If you are planning a large-scale data center expansion and require multiple AK859B units, contact the BuyRouterSwitch.com sales team directly.
