A7984A Overview

The HP StorageWorks 4/8 Base SAN Switch and 4/8 SAN Switch offer 4 GB connectivity for entry-level storage area networks (SAN), and the ability to grow to a core-to-edge infrastructure. The simplicity and ease-of-use advantages of these switches help increase administrator productivity and lower the cost of management. Both switches deliver eight (upgradeable to16) high performance Auto Sensing 1, 2, and 4GB/s Fibre Channel ports. An optional 4 port activation license increases the number of active ports to 12 or 16 ports. Plus, the 4/8 SAN switch and 4/8 SAN Switch are fully non-blocking and provide 64 to 128 Gb switching (4Gb full duplex) bandwidth. The 4/8 Base model provides single-switch connectivity for a new, simple SAN installation and connects to storage and servers only. The 4/8 SAN Switch scales to full SAN configurations defined in the SAN Design Guide. Small-form-factor-pluggable optical transceivers (SFPs) must be ordered separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary port specifications for the HPE StorageWorks 4/8 Base SAN Switch? +
The HPE StorageWorks 4/8 Base SAN Switch features eight active Fibre Channel ports. These ports support auto-sensing speeds of 1, 2, and 4 Gbps, providing reliable, high-performance connectivity for your storage area network infrastructure. It is designed to deliver consistent throughput for demanding enterprise storage environments.
Can the 4/8 Base SAN Switch be upgraded to support more than eight ports? +
Yes, this model is designed with scalability in mind. You can expand the port count beyond the base eight ports by utilizing valid port upgrade licenses. This flexibility allows administrators to increase fabric connectivity as their data storage requirements grow without needing to replace the entire switch chassis.
What type of environment is best suited for the HPE 4/8 Base SAN Switch? +
This switch is an ideal entry-level solution for small-to-medium-sized businesses or as a reliable edge switch in larger enterprise fabric deployments. Its compact form factor makes it suitable for rack-mount environments where space is at a premium, yet it maintains the robust Fibre Channel performance required for mission-critical storage traffic.
How does the HPE 4/8 Base SAN Switch handle interoperability with existing SAN fabrics? +
The switch is engineered to integrate seamlessly into existing SAN environments using standard Fibre Channel protocols. It provides full-fabric capabilities, allowing it to communicate effectively with other switches in the fabric while maintaining high data integrity and efficient routing of storage traffic across your infrastructure.
What management tools are available for monitoring the A7984A switch? +
You can manage the A7984A using standard HPE SAN management software. This allows for centralized oversight of fabric health, performance metrics, and port status. These tools enable IT teams to proactively monitor throughput and identify potential bottlenecks within the storage network, ensuring optimal uptime for your connected servers and storage arrays.
Does the HPE 4/8 Base SAN Switch support redundant power configurations? +
Reliability is a key component of this design. The switch is built to handle the rigorous demands of enterprise storage operations, utilizing internal power components designed for high availability. By maintaining stable power delivery, it minimizes the risk of unexpected service interruptions in your fabric, keeping your critical data accessible at all times.
What is the recommended approach for initial deployment of the 4/8 Base SAN Switch? +
Deployment typically involves mounting the unit in a standard 19-inch server rack and connecting your Fibre Channel host bus adapters and storage arrays via compatible SFP transceivers. Once physical connectivity is established, you can use the management interface to configure zoning and fabric parameters to align with your specific storage networking architecture.
Are there specific licensing requirements for the HPE 4/8 Base SAN Switch features? +
Basic fabric operation is included with the base unit, but advanced management features or additional port activations may require specific HPE licensing keys. We recommend verifying your current feature set against your performance goals to determine if supplemental licenses are necessary to unlock extended functionality within your SAN environment.
