3CRWX120695A-CH Overview

Lets Users Connect Securely to the Wireless LAN and Roam
An integral part of the 3Com Wireless LAN Mobility System, the 3Com Wireless LAN Switch WX1200, together with 3Com Wireless Switch Manager software, centrally manages and controls up to 12 3Com Wireless LAN Managed Access Points (MAPs), and is ideally suited for moderate sized, but complex, wireless environments with the strictest security requirements.

Control MAP configuration and optimize radio-frequency (RF) coverage and performance using the wireless controller managed from the 3Com Wireless Switch Manager accessed anywhere on the network. With a few keystrokes, change parameters for multiple MAPs, eliminating the time-consuming task of individually configuring each device, and providing simple setup.

Because wireless clients are mobile, 3Com uses innovative Identity-Based Networking™ to deliver network services based on user identity instead of ports or devices. Multiple controllers and switches, grouped into a Mobility Domain™, share user databases to support mobility and security across the entire network infrastructure, including remote offices.

The 3Com Wireless LAN Mobility System significantly enhances 3Com's existing foundation of wireless security with centralized security management. The exchange of user-based information within the Mobility Domain adds an entirely new level of control for user and group access to network resources. Once more, sharing user-specific security policies between WLAN controllers and switches results in a consistent enforcement of user and group attributes across the WLAN as the user roams.

The WX1200 wireless switch comes configured to support a maximum of 12 MAPs. WX4400 wireless controllers (which can be configured to support up to 96 MAPs) and WX1200 wireless switches can be mixed and matched together within a Mobility Domain to manage and control thousands of MAPs for unparalleled scalability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary role of the 3com WX1200 in a wireless enterprise network? +
The 3com WX1200 serves as a centralized Wireless LAN Switch designed to manage and orchestrate wireless traffic across your enterprise infrastructure. It acts as a Layer 3 managed switch, streamlining the deployment of access points while providing intelligent traffic routing, robust security policies, and high-performance throughput to ensure seamless roaming and reliable connectivity for mobile clients throughout your facility.
Does the 3com WX1200 support Power over Ethernet (PoE) for access points? +
Yes, this unit features integrated Power over Ethernet capabilities. This design allows you to deliver both data connectivity and electrical power over a single Ethernet cable to compatible access points. This eliminates the need for external power injectors or proximity to electrical outlets, significantly simplifying your physical deployment and reducing overall cable clutter in ceiling or wall-mount installations.
Can the 3com WX1200 handle Layer 3 routing tasks effectively? +
The WX1200 is engineered with sophisticated Layer 3 switching capabilities, allowing it to perform inter-VLAN routing and handle complex enterprise networking requirements. By managing routing decisions at the switch level, it reduces the load on your core routers and improves latency, making it an excellent choice for businesses looking to optimize their network segment performance and scalability.
What kind of management interface does the 3com WX1200 offer for administrators? +
Administrators can manage the 3com WX1200 through a feature-rich, intuitive interface designed for professional network control. It supports comprehensive configuration options for wireless policies, PoE port status monitoring, and security settings. Whether through a graphical user interface or command-line access, it provides the granularity required to maintain visibility over your wireless environment and respond quickly to changing network conditions.
Is the 3com WX1200 suitable for high-density wireless environments? +
Absolutely. This managed switch is built to provide stable, high-performance connectivity in demanding environments. By consolidating wireless management, it ensures that traffic is prioritized appropriately and sessions are maintained efficiently. Its robust architecture is specifically tuned to handle the load of multiple access points, providing a stable foundation for offices or campuses with high numbers of connected wireless users.
How does the WX1200 improve security within a wireless network? +
Security is a core focus of the WX1200. It supports advanced authentication protocols and traffic encryption to ensure that wireless data remains secure from unauthorized access. By centralizing the security policy, you can enforce uniform compliance across all managed access points, effectively mitigating potential vulnerabilities and ensuring that only authenticated users and devices can access your protected enterprise resources.
What is the physical port configuration for this 3com WX1200 unit? +
The 3com WX1200 is equipped with multiple high-speed ports designed to support both uplink connectivity and direct connection to wireless access points. These ports are optimized for low-latency traffic, supporting the heavy demands of modern wireless applications. The interface layout is designed to facilitate clean rack management while ensuring that each port maintains its PoE delivery standards under operational stress.
How should I plan the deployment of the WX1200 in my current network? +
Planning a deployment starts with identifying your network's core bottlenecks. The WX1200 should ideally be positioned in a location that centralizes the management of your wireless access point traffic. Ensure your rack environment provides sufficient cooling and power distribution to support the integrated PoE requirements, and map out your VLAN structure to align with the switch's L3 routing capabilities for maximum efficiency.
