3C16891 Overview

High performance, convergence-ready, 10/100 Module with PoE Support
This module delivers 48 ports of high-performance 10/100 Mbps Ethernet switching and Power over Ethernet (PoE) distribution over Category 5 twisted-pair copper cable.
3Com Switch 7700 modules support on-board or local Layer 2 switching, allowing packets to remain local to the module, which reduces backplane and switch fabric loading. This reduces congestion in the network, minimizing packet loss, to help enable applications to run faster across the network.
The reduction in latencies will help improve the quality of video and voice traffic across the network.
For those applications where PoE support is not needed, the 3Com Switch 7750/7700 48-port 10/100BASE-TX Module is available.
48 ports of in-line power 10/100 connectivity, for data switching and PoE distribution using the same cabling.
Local Layer 2 switching at 16Gbps between ports on the same module.
Interface transmission rates: 1Gbps (full duplex).
Supports IEEE 802.3z, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.3ad, IEEE 802.1p, IEEE 802.1D, IEEE 802.1Q, IEEE 802.3af.
3Com Switch 7750 External PoE Power Rack, purchased separately, provisions the power needed to be distributed by this module.
Power over Ethernet in the 3Com Switch 7750 family is supported by the 3Com Switch 7758 8-Slot, Switch 7757 7-Slot, and Switch 7754 4-Slot Chassis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of the 3Com 3C16891 PoE module? +
The 3Com 3C16891 is a high-density 48-port 10/100BASE-TX Power over Ethernet module designed specifically for the Switch 7750 series chassis. It provides reliable connectivity and simultaneous power delivery to network endpoints, making it an ideal solution for organizations looking to streamline infrastructure by consolidating data and power cables into a single managed environment.
How does the 10/100BASE-TX port speed impact typical office network deployments? +
While modern core backbones often utilize Gigabit speeds, 10/100BASE-TX ports remain highly efficient for standard end-user devices. This module is perfectly suited for VoIP phones, wireless access points, and standard desktop workstations that do not require high-bandwidth throughput, allowing you to maximize port density within your 3Com chassis for edge-layer connectivity.
Can I use the 3C16891 module to power high-demand devices like PTZ security cameras? +
This module provides standardized Power over Ethernet support for compatible devices. Before deployment, confirm that the specific power requirements of your IP cameras fall within the IEEE standards supported by the 3Com Switch 7750 chassis. It is recommended to calculate the total power budget of your chassis to ensure the module can safely support your planned device load.
Is the 3Com 3C16891 considered a managed or unmanaged PoE solution? +
The 3C16891 functions as an unmanaged PoE module when integrated into the 3Com Switch 7750 chassis. This design simplifies installation by removing the need for complex configuration, allowing for immediate plug-and-play operation. It is an excellent choice for environments that prioritize quick, reliable deployment and automated power delivery to connected network devices.
What are the physical installation requirements for this 48-port PoE module? +
This module is engineered for integration into the 3Com Switch 7750 modular chassis system. It occupies a single slot within the chassis, utilizing the backplane for both power and data transmission. Ensure your chassis has sufficient power supply capacity and the physical slot space required to accommodate this 48-port density module before attempting installation.
How does the PoE capability simplify cabling in an enterprise environment? +
By delivering electrical power over the same Ethernet cable used for data, the 3C16891 eliminates the need for individual power adapters or local AC outlets for each connected device. This significantly reduces cable clutter, decreases installation time, and provides greater flexibility when positioning IP telephones or wireless access points throughout your facility.
Is this module compatible with existing 3Com Switch 7750 chassis configurations? +
The 3C16891 is specifically designed for the 3Com Switch 7750 family. It offers seamless hardware compatibility, provided your existing chassis firmware and power supply units are rated to support the increased electrical load of an additional 48-port PoE module. Always verify your current chassis power capacity to ensure stable performance for all connected peripherals.
How should I monitor the performance and status of the 3C16891 after installation? +
While the module itself operates as an unmanaged unit, you can monitor the health and link status of your connections through the chassis management interface. LEDs on the front panel provide real-time visual diagnostics for port activity and PoE status, allowing for quick troubleshooting and verification of successful device power-up without requiring deep software configuration.
