3C16490-ME Overview

Low-Cost, Configurable, Power over Ethernet, 10/100 Switch for Convergence Applications.
The 3Com® Baseline Switch 2226-PWR Plus is the second member in the family of premium Baseline Plus switches that deliver enterprise-class solutions, customized and priced for small and mid-sized organizations. Full IEEE 802.3af-compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) support on all ports enable businesses to grow and expand both LAN and WLANs with a minimum network disruption and without the need for power cable runs.

The switch is designed to support emerging LAN, VoIP, IP telephony, WLAN convergence applications today. Choice of QoS traffic prioritization with automatic NBX voice traffic prioritization, make sure mission-critical and real-time applications run effectively enabling the switch to operate in larger networks. The switch supports up to 64 Virtual LAN (VLANs): VLANs group users based on data exchange requirements to ensure optimal use of available bandwidth. Traffic monitoring helps keep the network running at optimum performance even during busy traffic periods. Wirespeed, non-blocking Layer 2 throughput and a switching capacity of up to 8.8 Gbps can handle bandwidth-intensive applications.

Twenty-four 10/100 ports and two dual-purpose Gigabit SFP slots can be used for high-performance computers, as well as high-demand servers; copper and SFP fiber connections can be mixed together for versatile operation. Ports can be trunked/aggregated, to create an ultra-high bandwidth pipe to the network core.

A user-friendly browser interface enables even network novices to easily configure and administer the network. Auto MDI/MDIX and autosensing ports eliminates the most common cabling errors and simplifies installation, as well as detecting and adjusting the speed of connected devices to optimize network performance.

The switch can operate as a free-standing or rack-mounted unit with included mounting kit. The standard 19-inch, one rack-unit-high (1 RU) enclosure optimizes valuable office space. Sturdy design and construction pays off in high reliability and long service life. Limited Lifetime hardware warranty and advance hardware replacement provide peace of mind long after deployment.

Features:

- All port support for Power over Ethernet as per IEEE 802.3af.

- Twenty-four 10/100 ports support high-speed connections for demanding desktop applications, servers, network aggregation, and uplinks to the network core.

- Two dual-purpose Gigabit ports support copper or multimode shortwave fiber (1000BASE-SX) or multimode longwave fiber (1000BASE-LX) connections.

- Link aggregation combines any number of ports of any media to create up to four ultra-high-speed trunks, with up to eight ports per trunk, substantially increasing bandwidth to the network backbone or other switches.

- VLANs (up to 64) enable administrators to group users based on data or traffic requirements to ensure that traffic flow is directed according to priority business needs.

- Traffic monitoring or port mirroring aids troubleshooting by enabling administrators to examine suspect data streams by mirroring the data stream received to a monitoring port.

- Automatic NBX traffic prioritization detects and prioritizes NBX traffic without user intervention.

- Choice of methods for traffic prioritization including standards-based IEEE 802.1p , MAC address based and Port based (two queues per port) traffic prioritization enable networks to effectively run real-time multimedia applications, reserving bandwidth for time-sensitive, mission-critical traffic.

- Intuitive web browser interface makes it easy to set up and administer the network.

- Power over Ethernet configuration options give flexibility to converged networks enabling, disabling or limiting power per unit and per port.

- Non-blocking performance operates at full wirespeed on all ports, delivering unimpeded access to network resources.

- One Rack Unit (1RU) form factor optimizes rack space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary networking capabilities of the 3com Baseline Switch 2226-PWR Plus? +
The 3com Baseline Switch 2226-PWR Plus is a managed Layer 2 switch designed for robust connectivity. It offers essential switching features including VLAN support, traffic prioritization (QoS), and link aggregation, making it an ideal choice for businesses that need to manage network traffic efficiently while ensuring reliable data flow across their local area network.
How many ports are available on the 3com 2226-PWR Plus and what are their speeds? +
This switch features 24 ports of 10/100 Ethernet connectivity, all of which support Power over Ethernet (PoE) to power connected devices. Additionally, it is equipped with two dual-personality Gigabit uplink ports, which support either copper or fiber-optic connections, providing the flexibility needed for high-speed backbone integration or server connectivity.
Can the 3com 2226-PWR Plus provide power to IP phones and wireless access points? +
Yes, this model is specifically engineered as a Power over Ethernet (PoE) solution. By delivering electrical power over the same Ethernet cables used for data, it simplifies the deployment of PoE-enabled devices like IP phones, security cameras, and wireless access points, eliminating the need for separate power supplies at every end-device location.
Is the 3com Baseline 2226-PWR Plus suitable for small to medium-sized business deployments? +
Absolutely. This switch is tailor-made for SMB environments where managed, reliable network infrastructure is required without excessive complexity. Its combination of Layer 2 management, PoE capabilities, and versatile uplink options allows growing businesses to build a scalable and organized network that supports modern office hardware and high-performance demands.
How do I manage the configurations on this 3com switch? +
The 2226-PWR Plus includes a user-friendly management interface, typically accessible via a web browser or through a command-line interface. This allows network administrators to configure settings such as VLANs, port security, and traffic monitoring remotely, ensuring the network remains secure and optimized for daily business operations.
What is the benefit of the dual-personality ports on the 2226-PWR Plus? +
The dual-personality ports offer physical media flexibility. Each port allows you to choose between a standard RJ45 copper connection or an SFP fiber-optic transceiver. This is particularly useful in environments where you need to connect to a high-speed backbone or bridge network segments located at longer distances where copper cabling may reach its effective limit.
Does this switch support VLANs for network traffic segmentation? +
Yes, this managed switch supports VLAN configuration, which is essential for segmenting your network into smaller, more secure broadcast domains. By isolating traffic, you can improve network performance, increase security by restricting access to sensitive data, and manage bandwidth more effectively across various departments or user groups.
Is the 3com Baseline Switch 2226-PWR Plus compatible with standard Ethernet infrastructure? +
