3C16470B-US Overview

Simple, Rich-Featured Switching for Diverse Users
The 3Com® Baseline Switch 2016 is a 16-port unmanaged, 10/100 switch designed for small to midsize offices. This rack mountable, business-class switch can be installed in a wiring closet or as a free-standing unit.

The switch comes preconfigured for fast, easy installation using economical copper wiring. Auto-negotiation adjusts the port speed to match the communicating device.

Any of the switch's nonblocking 16 ports can deliver 10BASE-T Ethernet for users with average bandwidth requirements, or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet for power users or those with newer network connections. To simplify connecting cables, all 16 ports come with automatic detection of the Ethernet cable type (MDI/MDIX).

Like all 3Com Baseline products, this switch provides powerful, feature-rich practicality in a sturdy package designed for reliability, long life, and low total cost of ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary port specifications for the 3Com Baseline Switch 2016? +
The 3Com Baseline Switch 2016 features 16 auto-negotiating 10/100 Mbps copper ports. These ports support full-duplex and half-duplex operation, automatically adjusting to the speed and duplex settings of the connected devices. This configuration makes it an ideal choice for connecting workstations, printers, and other peripheral devices in a small office or workgroup environment.
Is the 3Com Baseline Switch 2016 suitable for rackmount deployment? +
Yes, this switch is designed for flexible installation. Its compact form factor includes the necessary mounting hardware to easily secure it into standard 19-inch server racks or equipment cabinets. Alternatively, the unit can be placed on a desktop surface, providing versatile deployment options for environments where rack space is limited or cable management needs vary.
Does the 3Com Baseline Switch 2016 require any initial configuration or software management? +
As an unmanaged Layer 2 device, this switch is designed for plug-and-play operation. It does not require any IP address configuration, firmware management, or software setup. Once powered on and connected to your network devices via Ethernet cables, the switch automatically manages traffic flow and MAC address learning, making it extremely simple to deploy.
How does the 3Com Baseline Switch 2016 handle network traffic congestion? +
The switch utilizes flow control mechanisms to manage data traffic efficiently. It supports IEEE 802.3x full-duplex flow control and back-pressure half-duplex flow control to prevent packet loss during periods of high network activity. This ensures reliable data transmission and reduces collision rates within your local network segments, maintaining consistent performance for connected workstations.
What are the power requirements for the 3Com Baseline Switch 2016? +
This model operates on a standard internal power supply compatible with common electrical outlets. It is designed to be energy-efficient for continuous operation in business environments. Because it lacks complex management features, its power consumption remains low and stable, which helps minimize operational costs while providing reliable connectivity for your office local area network.
Can I connect this switch to other network devices like routers or other switches? +
Absolutely. You can uplink this switch to a router, firewall, or another switch using one of its 16 ports. Since every port supports auto-MDI/MDIX, you do not need to worry about using specific crossover or straight-through Ethernet cables; the switch automatically detects the connection type and configures the port accordingly to ensure a seamless link.
What is the chassis build quality of the 3Com Baseline 2016? +
The switch features a rugged, black metal chassis designed for durability in enterprise settings. This solid construction provides effective heat dissipation and electromagnetic shielding, contributing to the device's overall reliability. The robust physical design ensures that the switch can withstand the rigors of a standard office rack or shared equipment room over long-term usage cycles.
How are the status LEDs configured on the 3Com Baseline Switch 2016? +
The front panel includes a set of intuitive status LEDs that provide immediate visual feedback. You can easily monitor the power status of the device, as well as the link and activity status for each of the 16 ports. This diagnostic lighting system allows administrators to quickly verify connectivity and troubleshoot physical cable issues without needing a console interface.
