210-19068 Overview

48 powered ethernet ports in a stackable switch with advanced layer 3 technology
One of Dell’s Most Advanced Switch Offerings
The PowerConnect 6248P is one of Dell’s most advanced switch offerings with advanced core switching capabilities for the small to medium enterprise. This 48-port Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3 switch is stackable, offers optional 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks and supports the latest version of the Internet Protocol — IP version 6 (IPv6) — enabling broader worldwide scalability. Power over Ethernet capabilities provide support for power-dependent network applications including wireless, voice over IP (VoIP), video conferencing and badge reading. High performance stacking is supported for up to twelve systems, and advanced security and quality of service (QoS) features make this switch ideal for applications such as VoIP, Layer 3 routing, high performance cluster computing (HPCC) and Internet SCSI (iSCSI) storage.

Lifetime Limited Warranty
PowerConnect switches not only provide the quality, reliability and capability you expect from Dell, but also the peace of mind that guarantees hardware for life — a true Lifetime Warranty.

High Density
Delivering significant rack density, the PowerConnect 6248P is designed to give users the flexibility to maximize server and workstation connectivity in a 1U form factor. Up to 576 servers and/or clients can be connected in a stack of twelve 62xx series switches to provide the maximum density, flexibility and manageability, and the stack is built on a 10/100/1000 Base-T Gigabit Ethernet switch.

High-Performance Stacking
The PowerConnect 6248P supports high-performance stacking for up to twelve systems (each running at 48 Gbps), which allows increased throughput to be added as needed without affecting network performance. With each switch supporting up to 184 Gbps in switch capacity, the customer can have almost 3 Terabytes of capacity in a single stack of 12 switches.

Power Over Ethernet
Enhanced Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities allow the 6248P to provide up to 15.4 watts of power for network attached devices like wireless local area network (WLAN) access points and VoIP handsets. (External power supply required for full 15.4 watts on all 48 ports).

10 Gigabit Ethernet
The PowerConnect 6248P switch supports up to four 10 Gigabit fiber and two 10 GBase-T copper Ethernet uplinks for connectivity directly to 10 GE servers, routers, enterprise backbones and data centers.

Advanced Layer 3 Capabilities
The PowerConnect 6248P supports advanced Layer 3 routing and multicast protocols to help reduce congestion and manage traffic in the network. It also supports frequently used local area network (LAN) routing protocols such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP) v1/v2, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) v2/v3, Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP), Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP), Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) and Link Layer Discovery Protocol-Media Endpoint Discovery (LLDP-MED).

Advanced Quality of Service (QoS)
The PowerConnect 6248P offers flexibility in QoS by giving network administrators the ability to prioritize time-critical network traffic based on a variety of user-defined criteria. Administrators can expedite traffic based on L2 or L3 information, such as IP QoS, and provide greater control over traffic flow within the network. Voice VLANs are provided specifically for VoIP applications.

Advanced Security
Access control lists (ACLs) can be supported on the switch, allowing the user to perform deep packet inspection. 802.1x port authentication offers both single and multiple host access. Further security is provided through Denial of Service (DoS) Attack Prevention, whereby the switch can help protect against common network attacks and CPU attacks.

IPv6 Certified
IPv6 is version six of the Internet Protocol that has been in development for over 20 years. IPv6 has been designed to handle IP address limitations of previous versions of the Internet Protocol, enabling an increased number of unique IP addresses for broader scalability worldwide now and in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary uplink capabilities of the Dell PowerConnect 6248P? +
The Dell PowerConnect 6248P features four integrated SFP+ ports designed for 10GbE fiber connectivity. These uplink ports provide high-speed throughput for core network aggregation or server interconnects, ensuring your network infrastructure can handle bandwidth-intensive applications without becoming a bottleneck at the distribution or access layer.
Does the PowerConnect 6248P support Power over Ethernet (PoE) for all 48 ports? +
Yes, this model is equipped with 48 ports of PoE, allowing you to power VoIP phones, wireless access points, and security cameras directly through the network cable. This feature eliminates the need for localized power supplies at the device level, significantly simplifying cable management and infrastructure deployment in enterprise office environments.
How does the Layer 3 functionality benefit my network architecture? +
With advanced Layer 3 routing capabilities, this switch performs inter-VLAN routing and static routing at the hardware level. By handling traffic management locally within the switch, it reduces the load on your core firewall or router, enhancing overall network efficiency and improving latency for inter-subnet communication.
Can I stack multiple Dell 6248P units together for increased port density? +
This switch is designed to be fully stackable, allowing you to create a single logical unit by linking multiple chassis together. Stacking simplifies your management overhead by providing a single IP address for the entire stack, while simultaneously increasing your available port count and providing hardware-level redundancy across the fabric.
What management protocols are supported on this managed switch? +
The Dell 6248P offers comprehensive management features, supporting industry-standard CLI, SNMP for network monitoring, and a web-based GUI. These tools provide administrators with granular control over VLAN configurations, Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization, and security features like Access Control Lists (ACLs) to ensure optimal performance and network integrity.
Is the Dell 6248P suitable for modern high-density data centers? +
While the 6248P serves as an excellent high-performance access or distribution switch, its 1U rackmount form factor is ideal for rack-dense environments. It balances robust PoE delivery with 10GbE uplinks, making it highly effective for deployments requiring a mixture of power-dependent edge devices and high-speed data backbone connections.
How does the switch handle Quality of Service (QoS) for real-time traffic? +
The switch includes advanced QoS mechanisms that allow you to prioritize time-sensitive traffic like voice and video. By configuring traffic classification and queuing, you ensure that jitter-sensitive packets are processed with higher priority than standard data traffic, maintaining clear voice quality and stable video streaming across the enterprise network.
What is the physical mounting requirement for this Dell switch? +
This unit is designed for standard 19-inch rack mounting and occupies 1U of rack space. It is engineered for enterprise-grade airflow and thermal management, so we recommend ensuring your rack setup allows for sufficient front-to-back ventilation to maintain optimal operational temperatures and hardware longevity during heavy traffic loads.
Can I get a bulk quote for multiple PowerConnect 6248P units? +
Absolutely. If you are planning a large-scale infrastructure refresh or require multiple units for a data center project, contact our sales team directly. We specialize in providing competitive bulk pricing and customized quotes tailored to the volume requirements of enterprise-level network deployments.
