AM869A Overview

HP 8/40 SAN Switch is ideal for organizations requiring a flexible solution that's forward and backward compatible, either as a small “building-block” switch for a departmental fabric or as a high-performance edge switch in larger core-to-edge SAN configurations.

The 8/40 SAN Switch enables 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gb FC technology in configurations of 24, 32, or 40 ports. A fully populated SAN switch with 40 ports provides an aggregate bandwidth of 680 Gb/sec. The 8/40 SAN Switch also allows organizations to use 4 Gbit/sec SFPs today and upgrade to 8 Gb/sec SFPs when required.

The optional Integrated Routing provides selective device sharing while maintaining remote fabric isolation for higher levels of scalability and fault isolation.

The Power Pack+ software provides the SAN administrator with the necessary tools to monitor the health and performance of the network through a single pane of glass. Enhanced capabilities ensures ample bandwidth for mission-critical applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of the HP 8/40 Base SAN Switch (AM869A)? +
The HP 8/40 Base SAN Switch is designed to provide high-performance Fibre Channel connectivity for enterprise storage area networks. It specifically offers 24 active ports out of a 40-port capacity, enabling scalable, high-bandwidth data transfer between servers and storage arrays while maintaining the reliability required for mission-critical storage environments.
Does the AM869A switch support non-disruptive scaling as my storage needs grow? +
Yes, the HP 8/40 is built with scalability in mind. The base model comes with 24 enabled ports, and you can scale up to the full 40 ports as your infrastructure demands increase. This pay-as-you-grow approach helps manage initial capital expenditure while ensuring you have the flexibility to expand without needing a complete hardware overhaul.
What kind of port performance can I expect from the HP 8/40 Base switch? +
This switch supports 8 Gbps Fibre Channel technology, which provides significant throughput improvements over previous generations. The ports are designed to deliver high-speed, low-latency performance essential for demanding applications such as database management, virtualization, and large-scale backup operations, ensuring your data paths remain efficient even under heavy workloads.
Is the AM869A compatible with existing Fibre Channel hardware in my SAN? +
The HP 8/40 features auto-sensing capabilities, allowing it to support 2, 4, and 8 Gbps Fibre Channel speeds. This backward compatibility makes it a versatile integration point for mixed-generation environments, enabling you to connect older storage arrays alongside modern 8 Gbps servers without requiring immediate replacement of your legacy infrastructure.
What management tools are used to configure the HP 8/40 SAN Switch? +
You can manage this switch using standard HP SAN management tools, which provide a centralized interface for fabric configuration, performance monitoring, and diagnostic troubleshooting. These tools simplify day-to-day administrative tasks, allowing network engineers to effectively manage zoning, port status, and overall fabric health from a single console.
Are redundant power supplies available for the HP 8/40 SAN Switch? +
The HP 8/40 switch is engineered for high availability in data center environments. It supports redundant, hot-swappable power supplies and fan modules. These features ensure that the switch remains operational in the event of a component failure, significantly reducing the risk of downtime and maintaining continuous access to your critical storage resources.
What is the primary deployment scenario for the HP 8/40 Base switch? +
This switch is ideally suited for medium-to-large enterprise data centers that require a robust fabric switch for server-to-storage connectivity. Its balance of port density and high-speed throughput makes it perfect for consolidated storage environments, providing the stable foundation needed for intensive virtual machine workloads and high-transaction applications.
How do I license the additional ports on an HP 8/40 base unit? +
To unlock the remaining ports beyond the initial 24 enabled on the base AM869A model, you typically require additional port-upgrade licenses. These license keys allow you to activate the extra physical ports through the switch management interface, providing a straightforward, software-driven path to expanding your port density without downtime.
